Why Isn’t My Vacuum Cleaner Working Properly?

Sometimes the answers to such questions are pretty simple and other times it is damn complicated. On this note, here are some tips you can follow to diagnose why your vacuum cleaner is not working as you expect, and what you can do about it.

Reason 1 - It Has Lost Suction And Is Not Picking Up The Power

Losing suction does not always mean the loss of suction it could be because of improper working of brush. So all you need to do in such case is take off your brush. Next feel the end of the hose and test the suction. If the suction seems right, you need to simply replace your brush and you are good to go.

If, on the other hand, you don’t feel adequate suction by taking off the brush, the next thing to check would be the dustbag. Whenever there is more dust in the bag, there would be less suction so if you can see dust and dirt near the opening, it’s time to change it.

If you could find the bag to be fine, you need to check the filters. Filters can restrict the airflow coming through the machine and hence reduce the suction of vacuum cleaners. A good thing to do in this case is to replace other filters with every five bag changes and HEPA filters every year.

Last but not the least, check the hose of the vacuum cleaner. Remove the tools and detach it from the main body. Drop a coin in one end and notice if it comes out of the other. If it doesn’t, the problem lies in a clogged hose. So unclog it and if it is not happening by yourself, we are just a call away.

Reason 2 - There Is No Power

If the vacuum cleaner is not doing anything at all, that is, there is no power. You need to stop right there. The reasons behind this could be that the vacuum cleaner is overheated due to which the automatic shutoff has kicked in. If that is the problem, you simply need to wait for a while and try it again after some time.

In other case, if it is plugged in and not running properly, or it keeps shutting down, you need to stop using it right away and check the hose to see if it is clogged. If the hose is fine, it is probably an electrical problem which you would not be able to fix and come to us right away.

Reason 3 - The Brush Is Not Turning Properly

The brushes turn when the belt transfers the power from the motor to the brush. The bush would not turn in case the belt is slipping or broken.

The second reason could be that the brush shuts off when it encounters unusual stress. If that has happened, it needs to be reset. In such case, find the small red button at the bottom of the vacuum. You can press this button to re-set the brush and it will start moving again.

Thirdly fibers from rugs or other things could get caught up in the brush and it stops moving. In that case, if it is just wrapped around the brush, you need to turn off the vacuum cleaner and carefully cut the fibers carefully.

Reason 4 - A Strange Noise Is Coming From A Vacuum Cleaner

The vacuum cleaners use a fan to create suction, tiny objects can be sucked in and rattle against the blades of the fan. These objects can break the fan and hence can start making noise. So if you hear a noise, turn off the vacuum immediately. Any noise of any sort usually means there’s something wrong with the machine.
